Alex Chilton and The Bangkok 3, De Nachten, Antwerpen, 30-01-2004

After a gruelling literary performance that lasted way too long, it was finally time for Alex Chilton and his Bangkok 3 (Pascal Deweze, Mauro Pawlowksi and Karel de Backer) to enter the stage. After a warm welcome from the audience (it is not often that you can see Alex Chilton on a stage in Belgium), they started playing. They had assigned numbers to every song, so it would be easier to know what song they were gonna play next (after all, they had only been able to rehearse for two days). Apparently -yes, my knowledge of Alex Chilton songs is very limited- they only played one Big Star-song ('In the street'). Some surprising covers/standards were also played (eg '634-5789', written by Steve Cropper (Booker T and the MG's) and Eddie Floyd). Although looking very 'concentrated', the band pulled it off quite fine, filling in the gaps where necessary (Chilton broke a string, so a solo had to be provided by Mauro). In fact, Chilton was so pleased he is considering releasing the concert, so keep an eye out for it.
